Joint Results are In: Squirrel & Nutmeg’s BVA Scores
At the heart of any responsible breeding program is a commitment to the future—not just for the next litter, but for the health and longevity of the breed as a whole. One of the most vital ways we ensure our dogs are fit for breeding is through BVA Hip and Elbow Scoring.
Why we test
Hip and Elbow Dysplasia are complex, hereditary conditions where the joints don't develop quite as they should. Over time, this can lead to painful arthritis and lameness. While environmental factors (like diet and exercise) play a part, the genetic link is significant.
By X-raying our dogs and having them assessed by a panel of expert scrutineers at the British Veterinary Association (BVA), we get a clear picture of their joint health. This allows us to make informed decisions, only breeding from dogs with healthy joints to give their puppies the best possible start in life.
The Results
We are absolutely thrilled to share the official results for Squirrel and Nutmeg!
Squirrel
Hips: 6/5 (Total: 11)
Elbows: 0/0
Nutmeg
Hips: 8/6 (Total: 14)
Elbows: 0/0
For those unfamiliar with the numbers, 0/0 is a perfect score for elbows, meaning no signs of dysplasia were found. For hips, the lower the score, the better. Considering the current breed median (average) for Tollers is around 11, we are very pleased with these results. Both girls have lovely, healthy joints and are officially ready for the next chapter of their journey.
As always, if you have any questions about health testing or why it matters when looking for a puppy, feel free to get in touch!
